Migrant Workers Day Celebrated





Manila, 11 June 2006.  The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) that Filipino workers in Riyadh and neighboring areas celebrated the tenth Year Anniversary of the Migrant Workers’ Day at the Philippine Embassy grounds on Friday, the 9th of June 2006, which started at 9:00 a.m. and lasted until 10:00 p.m.

For this years celebration which has a theme, Manggagawang Pilipino Sa Ibayong Dagat: Bayan Mo, Nagpupugay Sa Iyo, the Philippine Embassy tasked the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) as Overall Coordinator of the event. In particular, Welfare Officers Messrs. Armando A. Roa and Manuel Mamerto Boo L. Mercado III were assigned as point persons.

The Opening Ceremony was presided by the Embassy Charge d Affaires, a.i., Honorable Nestor N. Padalhin, and officials from the Embassy POLO. In his brief remarks, CDA Padalhin paid tribute to the 7 to 8 million OFWs around the world, more than a million of whom are in Saudi Arabia. He recognized the Overseas Filipino Workers as modern-day heroes and thanked them for helping the Philippine economy vibrant, not only through their remittances but also through their foreign friends whom they invite as tourists and investors in the Philippines.

The United OFW Association of Saudi Arabia, the biggest Filipino community in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), along with other like-minded Filipino groups and organizations in the Kingdom, cooperated for the success of the one-day affair.

Among other activities participated in by over 1,000 OFWs are: OAV Registration, POLO-OWWA Services, Free Medical & Dental Services, Libreng Tawag sa Pilipinas, Invitational Table Tennis, Open Womens Volleyball, Mascot Design Arts Contest, Search for Miss United OFW KSA, Raffle Draw & Give Away Items, and Social Functions.

The message of the OWWA Administrator, Honorable Marianito D. Roque, was read by outgoing Labor Attaché to Riyadh, Honorable Manuel C. Roldan. Incoming Labor attache, Honorable Rustico Resty S.M. Dela Fuente, was also present. END
