Surely OFWs around the globe will opposed any attempt to include OFWs on a plan to levy a $ 3.50 security surcharge on foreign-bound passengers leaving the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Republic Act 8042 known as Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995, Sec. 35 states that; all laws to the contrary notwithstanding, the migrant worker shall be exempt from the payment of travel tax and airport fee upon proper showing of proof of entitlement by the POEA.
Further, the then former Pres. Fidel Ramos heeded for our call to scrapped the 2 percent income tax imposed to OFWs, enacted the Tax Reform Act of 1997 that provides wide ranging tax break to different groups of individual including overseas Filipinos. That includes Travel Tax exemption to OFWs, Filipino permanent residents abroad or “balikbayan” whose stay or visit in the Philippines is less than a year.
This privileges that we-OFWs are enjoying now is only a small gift given by the Government to the unsung heroes of our country.
Update: Thank you! Departing OFWs exempted from $3.50 airport security fee.
