Riyadh metro is a rapid transit system under construction in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The metro is a part of the Riyadh Public Transport Project (RPTP).

The RPTP will be the largest public transport project, which comprises construction of a metro, a bus system and other transport services in Riyadh.

Construction of the Riyadh metro started in April 2014 and is expected to be completed by 2018.

The metro project will be owned and operated by the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA). The project will have an execution period of five years and an optional maintenance service period for the next ten years. It is expected to create about 15,000 jobs in Saudi Arabia.

Haramain High Speed Railway

The Haramain High Speed Railway project links the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City. A passenger station is currently being constructed in each of these cities. The four stations are designed on the principles of a modular approach to enable speedy delivery of high quality buildings and simultaneously enhance the passenger experience.

Makkah & Madinah stations are based on the principles of the terminus station; whereas Jeddah & KAEC are based on the principles of the through station. Each station contains, in addition to the main building, arrival and departure concourses, a mosque, civil defense fire station, helipad, terminals, short and long term car parking, lounges for VIPs, shops, restaurants and cafes. The stations have been linked with the public transport system and provided with pedestrian corridors for the light train stations intended to be implemented in these cities.

Newly arrived expatriate workers in various nationalities usually commented “Saudi Arabia is a boring country”. For the fact that there are no movie houses, bars, disco houses, alcoholic beverages; parties and strictly prohibits an unrelated man and woman in an embarrassing situation together.  To sum it all, the strict laws and forms of punishment in Saudi Arabia is very different from other countries even to those nations who embraced Islamic faith.

On the contrary, when expatriates get along with the Saudi laws, culture and traditions and get to know the Muslims way of life which is the – Islamic faith, then they will surely keep coming back to this country as much as they can. A cultural difference is not a big hindrance to live in this country. 

A western female in an online forum expat exchange commented “I am interested in moving to Saudi Arabia, not so much for the money, but because the culture and the people fascinate me. I don’t want to go all the way there and then only have expat friends (though I will need them as well). What I want to know is if it is possible for an expat (particularly a single western female) to have friendships with Saudi women: to visit in their homes, and offer hospitality in my home.”  In fact, there are many western nationalities who have already adopted the Saudi way of life.

 And I’m pretty sure many of them and other nationalities would love this country in the next decades to come,  surely in 2020. Considering the record phenomenal growth rates  of the Kingdom’s Domestic tourism today and the coming years to come. According to a recent report by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA), total income from domestic tourism in Saudi Arabia is forecasted to reach SR73.3bn in 2010 and SR101.3bn in 2020.

The Medina Chamber of Commerce also expects growing investments in real estate projects in Saudi Arabia to the year 2020.

 In spite of international markets reeling from the financial crisis, development and investment in Saudi Arabia’s real estate sector is expected to remain strong,” says one of the kingdom’s leading business figures Dr. Abdullah M. Bin Mahfouz, Vice Chairman of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

 Since 2005 thousands of jobs are already in construction sectors. In that workforce, a variety of jobs that need task identity is intended to thousands of expatriates from various nationalities. Saudi Arabia can now be called then the “Expatriates Haven in the World”.

 It also expected huge increase in the number of tourists visiting the Kingdom by 2020, adding the tourism sector would gradually reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil revenue. It will expand the tourism sector and will provide 900,000 new jobs for young Saudi men and women by 2020, according to a paper presented at the Saudi Travel and Tourism Investment Market held in Riyadh.

The city, along with other five economic cities, is a part of an ambitious “10×10” program to place Saudi Arabia among the world’s top ten competitive investment destinations by the year 2010, planned by SAGIA. The first stage of the city is planned to be completed in 2010, while the whole city is going to be fully completed by 2020. The city will help diversify the oil-based economy of the Kingdom by bringing direct foreign and domestic investments. The city also will help create up to one million jobs for the youthful population of the country, where 40% of the population are under 15.

To become the single greatest enabler of social and economical growth for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”. This is the vision that drives the development of KAEC as the destination of choice for all who want to invest, work and live, in and around the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. City Components

The city is divided into six main components: Industrial Zone, Sea Port, Residential Areas, Sea Resort, Educational Zone, and a Central Business District which includes the Financial Island.

1)      Industrial Zone – The Industrial Zone is estimated to cover 63 million m². The 4,400 hectares of land will be dedicated to industrial and light manufacturing facilities – identified as key growth drivers for the Saudi economy – and can now host 2,700 industrial tenants. The jobs created estimated to be in industrial and light industries (330,000); research and development (150,000); business and office (200,000); services (115,000); hospitality (60,000) and education and community services (145,000).  One major focus of the manufacturing sector is the ‘Plastics Valley’ output to service food packaging and storage, medical devices and products, sports safety, home construction, automotives etc. Another area is the downstream processing of petrochemical products and crude oil derivatives, sourced from the country’s oil industry. Equally efficient and state-of-the-art facilities will be provided for high-tech industries such as computer-chip manufacturing, sectors using raw materials such as steel, wood, paper and other light or small scale industries.

2)      The Sea Port – The Sea Port is estimated to cover 13.8 million sq meters, it will be the largest in the region with a capacity of over 10 million twenty foot equivalent (TEU) of containers per year. The port will have facilities to handle cargo and dry bulk, and will be equipped to receive the world’s largest vessels. There will be more than ample opportunities for freight-forwarders and cargo services. The existence of the Industrial zone within the city and the connectivity of the city to key cities within the country will add to the potential of the shipping, logistics and freight-forwarding business.  All shipping services will be further complimented by the logistics infrastructure provided by the adjoining Industrial zone in terms of warehousing and storage, packaging and distribution of goods.  

Another key component of the Port will be a custom-built Hajj Terminal with a capacity to handle up to 300,000 pilgrims on their way to Mecca and Medina, the holy Muslim cities.   

3)      Residential Areas – The residential area is planned to include 260,000 apartments and 56,000 villas. It will be divided into smaller residential, commercial, and recreational areas. Parks and green spaces will be used extensively throughout the residential area. The area is estimated to be home for around half a million residents, and another ten thousand tourists. Each district would feature its own public amenities, such as mosques, shops, and recreational venues. 

The city will be built for ‘intelligent’ living where communities will enjoy a suite of value added services such as eGovernment, home automation, efficient healthcare and transportation infrastructure. The vision of the smart city is to create new jobs and businesses, boost the performance of industries and attract residents by providing attractive living environments. 

4)       Sea Resort – The Resorts Area will be designed to feature services and amenities, hoping to draw both local and international tourists. Set to become a major destination on the map of Saudi Arabia and the map of the Middle East as a whole. It will include hotels, shopping centers and other recreational facilities. The number of hotel rooms and suites are proposed to be 25,000 hotel rooms in more than 120 hotels. Among the tourist draws at the resort is an 18-hole golf course, with training facilities and driving range. An equestrian club, yacht club and a range of water sports will also be constructed. The resort areas and the business districts will play host to travelers from across the globe, visiting the city on both business and leisure. 

The clear waters of the Red Sea and the virgin beach sands already make this region a sought-after diving destination. With city icons, such as the Grand Mosque and the Royal Gardens, as well as the retail and commercial components, KAEC is set to be a major tourism hub in the region.   

5)      Educational Zone – The Educational Zone is a part of plan to bring the Saudis capabilities and aspirations in technology to globally competitive levels. The Educational Zone is planned to consist of multi-university campus flanked by two Research and Development. The multi-university campus is designed to accommodate 18,000 students, and a 7,500 faculty and staff members.   

Education in KAEC will start from the kindergarten level and continue right up to the university level. Given the unique lifestyle in KAEC and the boom in the city’s cosmopolitan population, the educational sector will be an ever-expanding one with requirements for both local and international students.

The premier research & development centers to be located in KAEC will be multi-disciplinary with an experienced faculty and a large student body. These centers will require appropriate technology, infrastructure and administration, all of which are potential areas for private investments.

6)      Central Business District – The Central Business District (CBD) is planned to offer 3.8 million m² of office space, hotels and mixed-use commercial space. The Prince Abdul Aziz ibn Musaed Economic City (PABMEC) in Hail, 720 km north of Riyadh, offers more than 360 investment opportunities in agricultural and mineral industries as well as in educational and real estate projects. The city will cost SR30 billion ($8 billion).

Named after the first governor of the Hail region, PABMEC will have its own airport and railway. Some 80,000 people are expected to take up residence in the new city which will also have business and leisure centers. It includes agricultural and mineral industries, an education zone and a residential area with 30,000 housing units. Extending over 156 million square meters, it will also house 3,000 office units and a logistical supply and services center. The venture is part of the government’s efforts to boost the less developed regions in the country.

PABMEC is envisaged to be the Middle East’s largest logistics and transportation hub. This integrated project offers international investors and entrepreneurs immense opportunities for making profitable capital investments with assured high returns or for starting business and industrial ventures.

The city will have 12 distinct components for trade and services in sectors such as agriculture and food processing, mining, education, housing and entertainment. It will have a premier commerce and industrial hub to promote diversification in the economy. It will be the largest fully-integrated economic city in the Middle East providing transportation and logistics services.

PABMEC will exploit the strategic location of Hail as a link to a number of trade routes by building infrastructure for transportation services. Local mineral processing plants that add value to extracted raw materials are set to be a core activity.

About 30 percent of the funding will be allocated to the housing sector to establish about 30,000 residential units while more than SR6 billion will be earmarked to improve overall infrastructure of the region especially in telecommunication services, water and power. The project aims to use the Kingdom’s second competitive advantage after energy, its strategic location as a link between East and West. This will be leveraged through the establishment of a fully-integrated economic city with the main anchor being transportation and logistics services. Produce and minerals arriving from the north of Saudi Arabia and surrounding areas within Hail region will be traded, marketed and processed adding value to the raw material.

Given Hail’s location, geographic and historic surroundings, it was only natural to include an entertainment zone within this development. Furthermore, Hail is ideal for sports enthusiasts. Hail airport’s strategic location will allow it to serve as a hub for logistics services, centrally located within the Kingdom at the crossroads of all surrounding navigational and business routes.

The Center of Agricultural Industries and Services depends mainly on the high agricultural output in the north and the surrounding areas, making up one of the Kingdom’s main food sources. The center provides all basic agricultural services and value-added agricultural processing industries, in addition to storage, warehousing and distribution. This center promises the region’s transformation into a mass agricultural area, with Hail the main food source and distributor for the region.

PABMEC is being built in the Kingdom’s strategically located, fertile and mineral-rich northern Hail region. PABMEC has the goal of enriching and developing professionals and human resources and providing a center of education and training for young Saudi men and women, while employing graduates in a range of different economic activities. The Educational City will boast a center for ICT related studies, many schools and training centers that provide courses qualifying young job-seekers for all markets.

Research and Development firms will also support other industries in the city, introducing the knowledge economy to the region. By its fourth operating year, the knowledge area will have over 40,000 students enrolled in schools, training centers and universities.

The Agricultural Industries and Services Center is expected to attract over SR505 million in investments alone.

The Province of Jazan lies in the south west section of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It has a population of approximately 1.2 million and covers an area of 40,000 sq. km including some 5,000 villages and cities.

Its major city, Jizan, is home to the Port of Jizan, Saudi Arabia’s third most important port on the Red Sea.

It is ideally situated on the southern Red Sea coast with a coastline of almost 300 km and is very close to the main east and west sea trade routes to Europe, the Far East and Persian Gulf. The Farasan Islands, Saudi Arabia’s first protected wildlife area, is home to the endangered Arabian gazelle and, in winter, receives migratory birds from Europe.

Its plains are noted for the production of coffee beans and grain crops, like barley millet and wheat; and fruits, such as apples, bananas, grapes, mangoes, papayas, plums and citrus varieties.

An island strategically located at the heart of the development, the business district of Jazan Economic City embodies the main arteries of the commercial businesses.

Modern offices with state of the art IT infrastructure opens up a wide range of business opportunities, bringing the City to new heights in the region.

Commercial, Residential, Community and Industrial components are arranged in graduating concentric circles with the Regional Business Hub – Commercial Business District (CBD) Centre – forming the core of the city.

The establishment of the Port is fundamental to the establishment of Jazan Economic City. The Port provides a vital link to the surrounding region for the importation of raw materials and the export of value-added and processed materials and  products.

The Port at the mouth of the Red Sea provides easy access to the world’s shipping lanes with direct access to Europe, East Africa, Asia and Australasia.

Silicon processing in Jazan is ideal as it can be found in abundance and is crucial for future technology. With a market demand of approximately 1,200,000 tpa, and a projected growth rate of more than 5% per annum, silicon processing will be an advantageous industrial mix forJazan Economic City.

The Tech Park is focused on implementing and manufacturing, drawing on research and development from a wide range of public and commercial sources. The agri-tech industry is looking to add value to the regional agricultural industry, livestock and crops, improvement and management. Hydroponic development is a current and future technology that will also add value to the Jazan region.

Pharmaceuticals are a strong down stream industry of the oil industry and will be enhanced in the future by the development of nutraceuticals and health food products drawing on agricultural resources in the region, implementing new technologies and supplying a growing market in the immediate region.

JEC and Saudi Economy:  

 Jazan Economic City (JEC) focuses on four areas: Heavy Industries, Secondary Industries, Human Capital and Lifestyle. The proposed city will provide a high-quality environment for key industries, technology exchanges, commerce and trade, employment opportunities, education and training, housing and a broad spectrum of socio-economic activities for a projected population of 300,000 people.

1)      Heavy industries consist of:  Powerplant,  Port, Aluminum Smelter, Refinery and Steel

2)      Secondary Industries consist of : Fisheries, Tech Park and Agri Tech, Pharmaceuticals, Chemical and Plastics

3)      Human Capital consist of: specialized Training, On-job Training, Exchange Program, 500,000 Job opportunities

4)      Lifestyle consist of: Recreational, Residential and Services

Jazan Economic City will be developed with the philosophy of symbiotic development incorporating co-existing uses to the benefit of each of the components and the environment. Industries would be chosen to enhance the relationship rather than be developed in isolation.

The primary anchors of Port, Power and desalination, Oil, Aluminium, Steel and Copper provide strong downstream opportunities with industries as diverse as pharmaceuticals, food processing and high value agritech producers within a growing regional environment.

Jazan Economic City is ideally placed at the mouth of the Red Sea to service markets in Europe, Asia and East Africa as well as to receive raw materials from the surrounding countries that are currently not well served with processing and manufacturing facilities.

The establishment of an international airport for the region would complete a strong logistics hub also serving those markets.

Jazan Economic City is also central to a booming population. The populations in the immediate regions of KSA, Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea are expected to nearly double in the next 25 years while the population of Europe is projected to decline. Future markets in Africa and Asia are expected to expand while they are contracting in Europe and America.

Jazan Economic City  will  concentrate on expanding the social, economic, and agro-industrial activities and will make Jazan Economic City the largest employment areas. ### End
